Sports Podiatry

At Podiatry Professionals, our Sports Podiatry focused clinicians understand the unique demands that sports and physical activity place on your feet and lower limbs. We also understand the importance of relieving your symptoms to return you to your chosen activity as quickly as possible. In order to individualise a specific treatment plan our podiatrists will perform a comprehensive assessment which encompasses taking a detailed history of your presenting issue, a footwear assessment and a detailed physical examination including strength testing, movement testing, gait analysis and functional testing to establish the most appropriate treatment pathway that aligns your specific goals and progresses your quality of life

Foot Function Assessments

Our podiatrists (otherwise known as foot doctors) utilise the best evidence-based practices to perform biomechanical foot function assessments. These complex biomechanical assessments are key for assisting in diagnosing foot pain, gait problems, and walking and running patterns. These biomechanical assessments also involve analysis of the ankles, knees and hips as many of these variable factors can contribute to foot problems. Part of your biomechanical assessment will also involve our podiatrists looking at your foot alignment and the way it moves to see how it can affect joint, muscle and postural alignment. Our podiatric medical practitioners combine all this information to help find a treatment and educate you on the best possible solutions to your problems. We strive to provide the best possible outcome that is tailored to your needs with the goal of reducing your foot pain. Foot function assessments are useful in not only treating current conditions but also preventing injury by identifying underlying issues.

Video Gait Analysis
/ 3D Pressure Map

Podiatry Professionals use state-of-the-art gait assessment software and equipment to provide dynamic information about your gait pattern, whether walking or you’re running! As an elite foot and ankle clinic in Canberra, we put your feet first by using gait analysis software to obtain accurate and comprehensive information to allow our podiatrists to educate you on all aspects of your gait cycle. We strive to thoroughly break down the way you walk or run frame by frame to evaluate any underlying cause of your foot pain and then apply that to any orthotics you have or may require. We then relate this information to the type of footwear that best suits your feet and how your gait impacts your presenting condition. Please ask your podiatrist at one of our clinics to perform a systematic running assessment to provide advice on appropriate and proficient techniques that can improve running efficiency, decrease injury potential and eliminate foot pain.

Zebris Treadmill Assessment

Here at Podiatry Professionals, we have equipped our Sports Hub practice with a Zebris FDM-T Treadmill. The Zebris plantar pressure treadmill is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool that allows us to assess your walking and running mechanics in real-time, helping us identify biomechanical issues, gait abnormalities, and areas of excessive pressure that may contribute to pain or injury. This adds another layer of depth to your assessment but highlighting the things we can’t see in the way you walk; the pressure and force that enters your feet! Whether you're an athlete looking to optimise your performance or someone dealing with foot-related PAIN, our Zebris plantar pressure treadmill offers unparalleled insights to inform personalised treatment plans, highlight asymmetries and decrease your pain. How it works: The Zebris plantar pressure treadmill features an integrated pressure plate that captures detailed data on foot pressure distribution as you walk or run. As you move across the treadmill, sensors embedded in the surface measure the forces exerted by your feet, providing valuable information about your gait pattern, foot strike, and biomechanical alignment. This data is displayed in real-time on a computer monitor, allowing our podiatrists to analyse your gait dynamics and identify any areas of concern.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment modality that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in musculoskeletal tissues. These waves are directed towards the affected area, penetrating deep into the tissues where they trigger biological responses. Shockwave therapy works through several mechanisms to promote healing and alleviate symptoms in common musculoskeletal conditions. The main mechanisms include: 1. Stimulation of tissue regeneration: Shockwaves exert mechanical stress on tissues, triggering cellular responses that promote tissue regeneration. This includes the stimulation of fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for producing collagen, a key component of connective tissue. Increased collagen production can help repair damaged tissues and strengthen the affected area. 2. Neovascularisation: Shockwave therapy stimulates the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization) in the treated area. This process improves blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the injured tissues and removing waste products and toxins. Enhanced blood flow accelerates the healing process and reduces inflammation. 3. Breakdown of calcifications and fibrous tissue: In conditions such as calcific tendinitis or plantar fasciitis, calcium deposits or fibrous tissue can accumulate in the affected area, contributing to pain and dysfunction. Shockwaves can disrupt these calcifications and fibrous tissue, breaking them down into smaller fragments that the body can absorb and eliminate. This process helps restore normal tissue architecture and function. 4. Pain modulation: Shockwave therapy has analgesic (pain-relieving) effects through several mechanisms. It can inhibit the transmission of pain signals by affecting nerve activity and reducing the sensitivity of pain receptors (nociceptors) in the treated area. Additionally, shockwaves stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving substances produced by the body. By reducing pain perception, shockwave therapy improves patient comfort and mobility. 5. Anti-inflammatory effects: Chronic inflammation is a common feature of many musculoskeletal conditions, contributing to pain and tissue damage. Shockwave therapy has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the activity of inflammatory mediators and promoting the resolution of inflammation. By reducing inflammation, shockwave therapy helps create a more favourable environment for tissue healing and repair. These combined effects contribute to the therapeutic benefits of shockwave therapy in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. The most common conditions with the most successful research include: - Plantarfasciitis - Achilles tendinopathy/tendinosis (tendon pain) - Patella tendinopathy/tendonosis (tendon pain)
